What geofencing actually means

A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a real-world location — a shop, an office, a site — defined by a centre point and a radius. Geofenced attendance means an employee can only mark attendance from their phone when the phone reports it is inside that boundary. Punch in from home and the system refuses; punch in from the site and it records the check-in with a timestamp.

The key shift is that the phone becomes the attendance device, and location — not a fixed terminal — is what verifies presence. That removes the need for biometric hardware at every location, which is what makes it practical for distributed and field teams.

How a check-in works, step by step

It fits best where staff move but still report to known locations: field service, multi-site retail, on-site construction and installation, distributed sales. It is weaker where there is no fixed location at all, where phones are shared, or where connectivity is poor. It is also not a surveillance tool — it verifies presence at check-in, not continuous tracking, and staff should know how and when their location is used.
